This page has the latest radar sweep over our area. It is presented in 2 formats:
1) Base Reflectivity at 0.5 degree, (Left)
2) Storm Relative Velocity at 0.5 degree, (Right)

SRV is the motion of the storm elements themselves. Green indicates motion TOWARDS the radar. Red indicates movement AWAY from the radar. For reference, the radar site is at the Lubbock airport.

Base Reflectivity: Base Reflectivity basically corresponds to the amount of radiation that is scattered or reflected back to the radar by whatever targets are located in the radar beam at a given location. These targets can be hydrometeors (snow, rain drops, hail, cloud drops or ice particles) or other targets (dust, smoke, birds, airplanes, insects). The colors on the Base Reflectivity product correspond to the intensity of the radiation that was received by the radar antenna from a given location. The feed here is taken form a 0.5 degree tilt above flat (the lowest available) of the radar.
 
Storm Relative Velocity: Storm-Relative Velocity is the average motion of all storm elements with general storm movement subtracted out. This gives a peek into the action of the storm elements themselves. With green inbound and red outbound, the level of sheer can be estimated. Intensity is shown by shading. In example, a 30 inbound and 30 outbound would produce a 60 shear. Storm-Relative Velocity can be useful in finding mesocyclones or other circulation patterns.
 
Also in this feed is information from the West Texas Mesonet. The data appears as a pointer surrounded by several numbers. The data numbers are the dewpoint, temperature and barometric pressure. The arrow itself indicates direction of wind movement. The "tail feathers" indicate approximate windspeed. Windspeed is read as 10kt per full feather showing. 1 kt = 1.15 mph.
 
The software being used to retrieve the radar data is Gibson Ridge. It is capable of decoding and displaying many different radar products and views. VERY good software.
 
The date and time stamp show when the update took place. Time shown is in Zulu (or if you want, GMT) time. Our time locally is Z - 5 hours in daylight savings time, Z - 6 hours when it is not daylight savings.
